He didn't die in battle. Caracalla fell to a lone guard named Martialis, who stabbed him near Carrhae while the emperor was answering nature's call. The Praetorians killed their master just to install their own boss, Macrinus, into power. It cost Rome its stability, turning the throne into a prize for the men with swords.
