Hoover Dam Rises: Hope From the Desert

Construction crews began building Hoover Dam during the Great Depression, employing thousands of workers in temperatures exceeding 120 degrees to tame the Colorado River. The dam's completion two years ahead of schedule created Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, and generated hydroelectric power that fueled the growth of Las Vegas and Southern California. Over one hundred workers died during construction.
