Battle of Teutoburg Forest: Germans Annihilate 3 Roman Legions in an Ambush

Arminius had served in the Roman army. He spoke Latin, held Roman citizenship, knew Roman tactics intimately — and used all of it to lead three full legions into a narrow, forested corridor where their formations were useless. Varus lost roughly 20,000 soldiers in three days of ambushes. Augustus reportedly spent months afterward wandering his palace at night crying 'Varus, give me back my legions.' Rome never again seriously attempted to push its eastern frontier beyond the Rhine.
