Earthquake Shakes Azerbaijan: 26 Dead in Baku

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baku, Azerbaijan, killing 26 people and damaging thousands of buildings in the strongest seismic event to hit the Caspian region in 158 years. The quake exposed the vulnerability of Soviet-era apartment blocks to seismic forces and prompted a national building code overhaul for the oil-rich capital.
