1872 Birth

Born Emily Bruce Price in Baltimore. Her father was the architect Bruce Price, who designed luxury resort communities. She grew up wealthy and attended finishing school in New York.

1905 Event

Divorced her husband Edwin Post after discovering his infidelity. In 1905, divorce was scandalous. She supported herself and two sons by writing novels and travel articles.

1922 Event

Published Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home. She'd been asked to write it as a favor. It sold out immediately and went through ten editions in her lifetime.

1930 Event

Began a daily newspaper column and a radio show on etiquette. Her name became synonymous with proper behavior. She updated her book constantly to address new situations: phones, cars, airplanes.
