Appointed Minister of Defense by President Mohamed Morsi. At 57, he was the youngest officer to hold the post in Egyptian history.
Led a military coup overthrowing Morsi after mass protests. Troops dispersed two pro-Morsi protest camps in August, killing over 800 people in a single day.
Won the presidential election with 96.1% of the vote. Turnout was 47%.
