Biography

Robert Gillespie is a Scottish musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He is the lead singer, founding member, primary lyricist, and sole continuous member of the alternative rock band Primal Scream. He was the drummer for The Jesus and Mary Chain in the mid-1980s, leaving after the release of the band's debut album Psychocandy, and was once the bassist for The Wake.

Became the drummer for The Jesus and Mary Chain while simultaneously fronting Primal Scream. Played standing up because he couldn't actually drum very well. Left after their debut album Psychocandy.

1991 Event

Primal Scream released Screamadelica, produced by Andrew Weatherall. It fused acid house, gospel, dub, and rock into something nobody had heard before. Won the first Mercury Prize.

2021 Event

Published his memoir Tenement Kid. Critics praised its raw account of growing up working-class in Glasgow and the 1980s indie scene.
